| | History of the UglydollsUglydolls are taking the world by storm! The limited edition plush collectables emerged from the minds of two star crossed artists Sun-Min Kim and David Horvath who met at Parsons School of Design in New York City. The dolls came from the doodles David drew at the end of their love letters. That Christmas, after moving back home to Korea, Sun-Min suprised David with a plush, hand sewn version of the first character he drew, Wage. He showed it to his friend Eric Nakamura who owns Giant Robot in LA. Eric thought he was pitching a product and promptly ordered 20. The rest, as they say is history. The Ugly Dolls come in a number of types and sizes. The original Uglydolls were the classic 1 foot dolls, launched in 2002, followed by the Little Uglydolls (7" tall), the Giant Uglies (2 foot tall), the Uglydoll Clip-ons (4" keychain) and recently the Vinyl Uglydolls (not yet officially available in the UK). There have also been a number of variant releases, such as the Secret Mission Uglydolls (all Black), released in 2006, and the new Ice Lodge series (all White) which have been released in November 2007. Each Uglydoll is handmade, and has slight variations, which makes every ugly doll unique. They each have a tag which describes their character's personality, likes and dislikes. At present, there are twenty Uglydoll characters, though this number is constantly increasing (and will increase to twenty-five during 2008 - see Breaking News below): - Abima (new for 2007) has one arm in your cookie jar and an idea what to do next. He is scared of the dark. His cousin is Wage.
- Babo makes up for in love what he lacks in mind power. He may need love, guidance and some parenting. So take him to as many places as possible! Keep your cookies and money on the highest shelf, though. His best friend is Wage and likes to tease Tray.
- Big Toe (new for 2007) is very busy, but he will take care of everything; just watch. He has the scoop on the all the latest info.
- Bop 'N' Beep love to do everything together, such as arguing over what movie to watch. (Bop 'N' Beep seem like they are attached to each other!!)
- Chuckanucka worries about pretty much everything under the sun. He is so cute in orange.
- Cinko is very shy and quiet but has a good sense of humor. He is terrified of water, and is Target's little brother.
- Deer Ugly (new for 2007) lives in the forest, but wants to see the world. He wants you to write him letters.
- Gato Deluxe (new for 2007) is a real sweetheart who knows he's big time.
- Icebat lives in an ice cave, inside an ice box; he wants to hang out with you, preferably upside down. Whatever he touches turns to ice, nut has a warm out and is one of the most friendly uglydoll.
- Jeero just wants to hang out with you. Don't ask him too many questions (he doesn't know anything). He loves to exercise. (he's fat) (has a strong desire for cupcakes)
- Moxy is a real get-up-and-go Ugly. Her antennas pick up signals from far and wide.
- Ox is not a very good listener, but he puts his ears to use in other ways. Tuck them into your shirt and take OX for a stroll. OX loves magic, and his favorite trick is turning your stuff into his stuff.
- Peaco is very shy on the outside; on the inside, she is a wild women (you can see it in her eyes). She loves water dancing, much to the distress of her cousin Cinko.
- Target is the grandfather of the Uglydolls, which is why he has hair and a few extra limbs. He is often caught bailing other uglydolls out of trouble.
- Toodee (new for 2007) is curious about everything. If he had a nose, it would be in everything. What’s this? What’s that? Toodee's questions drive Jeero up the wall.
- Tray is the brains of the Uglydolls; in fact, she has three brains, one for each blue eye. The reason her eyes are so blue is because she eats so many blueberries. She sometimes talks Babo into getting blueberry pie for herself. Unfortunately, Babo often brings back rocks. (she has a secret crush on target and wants to marry him someday!)
- Uglydog does not like to beg, sit, or stay...but he loves to help out.
- Uglyworms (new for 2007) want power. The power to do great and wonderful things. They want your power.
- Wage is a hard worker, just like you. He works at the local super-mart, although the super-mart people don't realize it.
- Wedgehead sees things the way you see them, but has to stand on his head to do so. He is working with OX to prove that humans exist.
It has been rumoured that Target has become the first of the original Uglydolls to be retired - production has stopped - and that Cinko may also be retired. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! All new Uglydolls are being made in Classic, Little, Giant, and Keychain sizes, except for Sailor Babo which will only be produced in Little and Giant Size since this was the Uglycon mascot and was exclusive in its regular size. Know what? We haven't mentioned the 6 foot Uglydolls! These are extremely limited massive Uglydolls that make a fantastic room companion or mascot. These are only available on request, and only a very few types are every available at any one time. Currently lurking about in the UK, we are told, are Peaco and Toodee, but you'll need to be quick to spot them. Ugly Dolls were recently accepted as part of the French State Toy Collection at the Musee Des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. BREAKING NEWS! Cinko will not be retiring due to David Horvath's new and improved Cinko coming April 2008 along with Suntan Target, Poe, BooBoo Ugly Ghost, Pugly, Plunko, and Babo's Bird. You can buy Uglydolls in shops but be warned; you won't find them in any national high street chain. Uglydolls are exclusive to independents & small chains with only the coolest, trendiest stores offering Ugly Dolls for sale. Want to meet all the Uglydolls? | |
